Understanding Minds, Guiding Futures

Advances in neuroscience are rapidly transforming our understanding of the brain, reshaping how we diagnose disease, enhance cognition, and intervene in human behavior. Yet these innovations also raise urgent ethical questions: How should neural data be used in medicine, law, and public policy? What counts as responsible brain enhancement? How do we protect autonomy, dignity, and equity in an era of brain-targeting technologies?

The UNC Neuroethics Research Initiative aims to investigate these challenges by integrating neuroscience, philosophy, law, and public policy to better understand how advances in neuroscience can guide the development and implementation of these innovations in ways that promote justice, transparency, and human flourishing.

Our mission centers on engaging and training the next generation of scholars, clinicians, and policymakers through open conversations, mentorship, and community involvement—helping future leaders think carefully about the ethical questions raised by brain science and develop responsible solutions that protect individuals and communities as neuroscience continues to shape society.
